Sword – 002 – Mycenaean horned sword – Bronze Age

The Mycenaean horned sword represents a sophisticated example of Bronze Age metallurgy and weapon design, likely serving as both an effective weapon and a status symbol for the elite warriors of the Mycenaean civilization.
Its name comes from the two horn-like or crescent-shaped protrusions flaring out from the base of the hilt, just above where the blade begins. These swords typically feature a full tang, meaning the blade material extends through the handle for greater strength. The grip would have been made of organic materials like wood, bone, or ivory, secured to the tang with rivets, though these perishable materials rarely survive.
Mycenaean swords like the horned type generally ranged from 60 to over 80 cm, with some earlier Mycenaean “rapiers” reaching over a meter. Type G, a later horned type, is noted to be around 45 cm long, placing it closer to a long dagger or short sword.
